At the end of July 2006, Maasmechelen made the news when it became known that a swastika could be recognized in the fountain on the town square. This was noticed by users of Google Earth and reported to the authorities. The mayor promised to have the fountain remodeled, although Robert Tachelet, the architect of the fountain built in 1979, was furious. According to the mayor, the swastika was not visible from the ground.
