In the Warande, we find a monument in honor of Count Werner de Merode next to the Aderbeek. We take the Prinsendreef and then the Helleweg, the boundary between Everberg and Kortenberg. Count Werner de Merode was born in 1797 in Brunswick. He died on August 2, 1840. He felt unwell when he followed the monthly procession around the church of Everberg after the morning mass. In the afternoon, he wanted to go hunting with his son Louis. He felt unwell again, leaned on his son, and died at the spot where the monument was erected in his arms. The inscription on the memorial reads as follows: "In pious memory of Jean-Baptiste-Werner-Ghislain Count de Mérode, struck down here by death on August 2 in the arms of his son Count Louis de Mérode. Our first duty is that of example last words of the deceased."
