This church is also called the "Cathedral of the Land" due to its monumental size and was built around the turn of the century. Pastor De Maître wanted to revalue the ecclesiastical life in the village with a prestigious construction project. However, the plan was rejected because it could not be funded. After several downsizings, the sixth plan was approved, provided that the pastor stood surety for the payments with his personal belongings. When the bill became even larger than expected, the story had a tragic ending.
The tower and western facade in Renaissance style were built between 1897 and 1899, and the nave in neo-baroque style between 1908 and 1910. Inside, the communion bench from the Debosschere brothers from Tielt is remarkable. The church is classified as a monument and has been thoroughly restored. The church square has been completely redeveloped. Next to the church stands the statue 'De Flandrien' in tribute to Briek Schotte from Kanegem, born in 1919.
