At the end of the 19th century, the Izegem city council had its own power plant built. It was inaugurated in 1901 by the then Prince Albert. The largest steam engine ever installed here is the machine that has been preserved and protected until now. The machine dates back to 1936. It is a steam engine with 2 cylinders (tandem compound) of 1650 hp. The flywheel, which weighs 36 tons, rotated at 107 revolutions per minute.
