Harelbeke was liberated by the 9th (Scottish) Division on the night between 19 and 20 October 1918. The Harelbeke New British Cemetery is a communal cemetery dating from after the Armistice which came into existence to offer a final resting place to the many soldiers of the Allied liberation offensive (1918) who had been killed on the surrounding battlefields and to the many people who lay buried in German or municipal graveyards in 1924 – 1925. In total, 1116 people are buried here.
