The "tobacco factory," as the residents of Menen know this building best, was established under Louis XIV around 1685. Given the housing of various garrisons in a fortified city like Menen, the original function of the building was as a "military hospital," later becoming a school with a boarding house. In 1830, the building was converted into a tobacco factory that remained operational until 1991. In 1995, the property was purchased by the city of Menen. In 2008, it was ultimately decided to develop a trendy residential project consisting of lofts, apartments, duplexes, and a hospitality business situated around the inner courtyard.
