Meerdonk è un villaggio nella provincia belga di Fiandra Orientale e una frazione di Sint-Gillis-Waas. Il villaggio si trova a nord del comune, al confine con i Paesi Bassi. Meerdonk contava nel 2001 quasi 2000 abitanti.
Il nome Meerdonk significa rialzo sabbioso. La signoria di Merdonc "moer ende wostine" faceva parte, fino alla fine del XIII secolo, dei possedimenti dei burgomastri di Gand, dopo di che, insieme al Paese di Waas, divenne proprietà dei conti delle Fiandre. Fu allora chiamato Merdonck. La descrizione "moer ende wostine" si riferisce all'importante attività economica dell'estrazione di torba. La torba veniva utilizzata come combustibile e per l'estrazione di sale. La torba veniva estratta in estate, quando l'acqua si ritirava. Veniva tagliata in grandi blocchi, essiccata e trasportata nelle città con piccole barche. I wostinen erano i terreni incolti che rimanevano dopo l'estrazione. I terreni ricchi di torba erano chiamati moeren. Ancora oggi molti nomi di strade si riferiscono all'estrazione della torba. L'inondazione di Farnes del 1584 allagò la maggior parte delle paludi di Meerdonk. Questo portò alla creazione dell'area dei canali di Saleghem. Meerdonk era inizialmente un villaggio di Vrasene e apparteneva ecclesiasticamente a Vrasene fino al 1807. Divenne un comune indipendente il 1 marzo 1845. Una prima chiesa fu costruita nel 1683.
