Het ligt ten noordwesten Dronrijp, ten noordoosten van Schingen en ten westen van Menaldum. Het dorpsgebied wordt in noorden begrensd door het Oudemeer en in het zuiden door de Oudevaart .
Net als de nabijgelegen Schingen bestond Slappeterp waarschijnlijk al rond het begin van de jaartelling en was het ontstaan op een lange kwelderwal. Anders dan Schingen heeft Slappeterp geen states gekend. Het wordt in schriftelijke bronnen voor het eerst genoemd in de 13e eeuw als Slepelterp, in 1469 was er sprake van Slepperdorp.
