Woudrichem ist eine mittelalterliche Stadt, die am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts zu einer befestigten Stadt wurde. Woudrichem entstand um 900 an einem hohen Ufer der Waal und wurde schnell zu einem wichtigen Fischerort. Im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert kam Woudrichem unter die Herren von Altena, die aus Woudrichem eine blühende Handelsstadt machten. 1354 wurde die Flusszoll des Grafen von Holland nach Woudrichem verlegt. Ein goldenes Jahrhundert begann, die Stadt wurde reich und vornehm. Um 1390 war Woudrichem vollständig von Stadtmauern umgeben. 1420 wurde der Zoll nach Gorinchem verlegt, wonach Woudrichem in Verfall geriet. Woudrichem war Teil eines Verteidigungstriangles Woudrichem-Gorinchem-Loevestein. Du siehst die beiden Städte auf der anderen Seite der Waal.
