Waterloo Avenue 59

Maxime Weygand was officially born in Brussels on January 21, 1867. But that is not really certain. It is claimed that he might have been an illegitimate son of Leopold II, or of his sister Empress Charlotte. No parents are mentioned on his birth certificate, but the place of birth is noted: De Waterloolaan 59 in Brussels. This origin has never been confirmed or denied by the royal house.

A guardian from Marseille, David Cohen, appeared, who sent him to Cannes for an education, after which he ended up in Paris for military training. He was noticed in the army by Marshal Foch. He rose to the rank of major-general during World War I.

Between World War I and World War II he stayed in Poland. During World War II, he fought alongside Marshal Pétain, who became head of state during the Vichy regime that collaborated with the Germans. As a result, Maxime Weygand also had to flee after the war.
