The most of what you see on the “Grote markt” is not older than the 17th century, except the City hall of 1402. All what was destroyed before that was destroyed. Where once stood the old belfry is now the St Michael’s Tower. The lake, the town halls and the 1st Meert from the 14th century are no longer visible.
During the war of 1695, Brussels was besieged by Marshal Villeroy. Only the hall was not destroyed with artillery. The buildings have reopened between 1695 and 1702 by Louis XIV. There were many genres used as Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo and Louis XIV style. Nevertheless, this square was the most harmonious square in Europe.
It was during this rebuilding that a number of streets that lead to the square were corrected. This was the case for the Hoedemakersstraat, the Colline and Boterstraat.
