Eén daarvan is dat het een verbastering zou zijn van het Franse "jardin" wat tuin betekent. Een andere verklaring verwijst naar het woord Jordicitie, een jurisdictie of rechtsgebied. Een derde verklaring is dat het een verwijzing is naar het huis De Jordaan op de Lindengracht.
