Van de romaanse abdij die in 1015 werd gesticht, blijft enkel nog de crypte (1016) en de Westbouw (eind 12de eeuw) over.
Het schip en koor werden vanaf 1514 heropgebouwd in laatgotische stijl.
Naast de gewelven die uit verschillende ribben versierd met monumentale geschilderde gewelfsleutels bestaat, valt de Sint-Jacobuskerk ook op dankzij de prachtige renaissancistische kerkramen (1525) en barokke beeldhouwwerken in wit geschilderd lindehout (17de eeuw).
Hoewel het klooster en de bijgebouwen in de 19de eeuw verwoest werden, werd de oude kloosterinfirmerie onlangs herontdekt achter moderne gevels en zou voortaan het Centre wallon d’Archéologie du Bâti moeten huisvesten.
