Alpina is een Duitse automobielconstructeur, die zijn gamma baseert op BMW-modellen. Daarom krijgt elk model ook de BMW-prefix, zoals in bijvoorbeeld de BMW Alpina B3 Bi-Turbo. De slogan van Alpina was jarenlang: Perfektion im Detail.
In 1963 lanceerde BMW de BMW 1800, die een jaar na de BMW 1500 kwam. Deze was veel pittiger dan zijn voorganger en dit ontgoochelde dus de mensen die net een 1500 hadden gekocht. Burkhard Bovensiepen creëerde als jonge ingenieur eenzelfde vermogen bij de 1500 als bij de 1800 door een dubbele carburator.
