Chantemelle

Although the region was plagued in the past by malaria, it is completely free of it now! The Semois was the evildoer. It is the river par excellence in the south of the province of Luxembourg. It rises in Arlon, the provincial capital, and heads quietly west. In the past, its upper course produced large marshes where Anopheles was a cause of disturbance to local residents. As a result, the mairais have largely been dried up. Chantemelle is located in this former marshy region, on the northern edge of a vast forest.

TYPE OF ROAD

Around Chantemelle you tread paved roads (asphalt of course). The woods present a diversity of roads with base and earth. After rainy weather some parts seem to be transformed into small bridges, but the sandy soil is well permeable – which does not mean that you will not return full of mud after this adventure walk. We advise wearing waterproof shoes – not necessarily rubber boots – during or after rainy weather. But it remains impossible to take pousettes or wheelchairs.

MARKUP
In the Bois d'Étalle you follow the white-red lines of the Grandes Randonnée trail.

PARKING
You can store the car for a few hours at the front or side façade of the neoclassical church of Chantemelle, on a square with very pretty trees.
