The museum contains original engines as well as scale models incorporated into a display of the history of trains in Italy. The displays include the Bayard, the first locomotive in Italy, which started its run from Naples to Portici on October 3, 1838.
Castel Nuovo (distance from start: 10.2 km/6.34 miles)
In a hall of the castle the famous Barons conspiracy against King Ferrante, Alfonso's son, occurred. The King had invited the barons for a feast; but, a certain point, he had the garrison close all the hall's doors and all the barons were arrested and later executed.
Royal Palace (Naples) (distance from start: 11.02 km/6.85 miles)
The Royal Palace is one of the four residences used by the Bourbon Kings of Naples during their rule of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (1730-1860). The Royal Palace is on the site of an earlier building meant to host King Philip III of Spain, who however never made the trip.
Piazza Plebiscito (distance from start: 11.09 km/6.89 miles)
In the first years of the 19th century, the King of Naples was Murat (Napoleon's brother-in-law). He planned the square and building as a tribute to the emperor.
The church is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome.
The church of San Francesco di Paola (distance from start: 11.32 km/7.03 miles)
Pompeii (distance from start: 12.21 km/7.59 miles)
Castel dell'Ovo (distance from start: 12.54 km/7.79 miles)
The castle is connected by a small causeway that is a popular place for newlyweds to have their wedding photos taken.
The castle's name stems from a medieval legend which holds that the poet Virgil, who developed a medieval reputation as a great sorcerer, had a magical egg put in the foundations to support them. Its location affords it an excellent view of the Naples waterfront and the surrounding area.
