The enhanced photograph entitled ’D’autrefois’ seems to be the only remaining part of the central pane of a triptych Khnopff created in 1905 and exhibited several times immediately after its completion, including in Brussels, Venice, Bruges, Paris and Munich.

This triptych evoked a physical portrait of the city of Bruges and Khnopff alluded to this reference in the title variations employed throughout the varied catalogues. The left pane depicted a canal, the right one Marie of Bourgogne’s tomb.

The picture, with its unusual framing, evokes the mysterious figure of a recumbent woman, drinking from a goblet, underlining the sacred aspect of the vision (from Anne Adriaens-Pannier, in catalogue ‘Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921)’, Brussels, RMFAB, 2004, p. 249-261)

Villersstraat (distance from start: 0.03 km/0.02 miles)

Villersstraat
Brussel
Named after the refuge of the Cistercians of Villers la Ville, in the neighborhood of Nivelles. The house stood at the corner of the Eikstraat (Oak Street), but was replaced by the Lyceum's library. This street was known as Cattestraete (Cats Street), because of its stray cats but was renamed in 1851 because a Cats Street already existed near the Place Rouppe. That one disappeared some decades later. Part of the first surrounding wall of Brussels (13th century) can be seen at the end of this street.

‘CLUSTER’ (2010) - RAINER GAMSJÄGER - location : SQUARE
Brussel
‘Cluster’ is a monumental multi-channel video installation. White smoke almost seems to dance in front of a black background.

It looks like a natural phenomenon, but in fact we see images of a smoke bomb.

Rainer Gamsjäger (AUT, 1974) creates computer-generated works, but is often inspired by nature. The artist made, amongst others, a series of works about natural phenomena to which ‘Cluster’ forms the epilogue. Gamsjäger uses self-programmed software to manipulate digital structures.

Heuvelstraat (distance from start: 0.57 km/0.36 miles)

Heuvelstraat
Brussel
The most of what you see on the "Grote markt" is not older than the 17th century, except the City hall of 1402. All what was destroyed before that was destroyed. Where once stood the old belfry is now the St Michael's Tower. The lake, the town halls and the 1st Meert from the 14th century are no longer visible.

During the war of 1695, Brussels was besieged by Marshal Villeroy. Only the hall was not destroyed with artillery. The buildings have reopened between 1695 and 1702 by Louis XIV. There were many genres used as Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo and Louis XIV style. Nevertheless, this square was the most harmonious square in Europe.

It was during this rebuilding that a number of streets that lead to the square were corrected. This was the case for the Hoedemakersstraat, the Colline and Boterstraat.

‘UNTITLED’ (2011) - Nicolas Provost - location : Centraal Station/Gare Central
Brussel
The new short fiction film from Nicolas Provost is made completely out of stock footage. Stock footage refers to film or video footage that already exists. For example: moving images of cities, famous buildings, dangerous wildlife.

Filmmakers often use this prefabricated material as illustrative material in a very sober way. Provost wants to show that stock footage can also have an esthetic and cinematic value and that it can tell a story.

Nicolas Provost (BEL, 1969) is a filmmaker and visual artist who lives and works in Brussels. His work is a reflection on the grammar of cinema and the relation between visual art and the cinematic experience.

Degouve de Nuncques likes solitude and it’s only on rare occasions that a living figure animates his work, always reminiscent of a dream. Silence – heavy, mysterious and imperious – seeps through it all.

All movement is banned, life has come to a standstill and the birds which should have given life to these evocations of real life are only magical creatures, prompting tender and poetic emotions(from Gisèle Ollinger, in ‘Musée d’Art Moderne. Œuvres choisies’, Brussels, RMFAB, 2001, p. 104-105)

Christus / Christ (distance from start: 2.54 km/1.58 miles)

Christus / Christ
Brussel
SYMB 5100

“Black is the most essential of all colors.” wrote Redon in To Oneself, a revealing work, as the pictorial and graphic production of this visionary poet, who was fascinated by science, a music lover and passionate about literature.

This Christ is part of the works that Redon called “The Blacks”. These were his charcoals, etchings and lithographs, produced after the 1870 war, once he’d asserted his individual style. The figure of Christ is relatively rare in his first Blacks, created throughout the 1870s and 1880s, a time period which saw the emergence of an idealist line of thought.

Later, Redon would frequently borrow from religious imagery – the figure of Buddha joining the one of Christ – so conducive to suggesting mystery, evocating a spiritual atmosphere and expressing metaphysical questions.

This charcoal drawn, as was the artist’s habit, on colored paper, in this case yellow, has turned a lovely shade of gold thanks to fixatives and the passing of time. The velvety material, pencil-etched in parts, the depth of the various shades of blacks, the modeling determined by the use of chiaroscuro – obtained by crisp contrasts between dark and light tones – stump and gum, all show an amazing technical mastery (from Brita Velghe, in ‘Musée d’Art Moderne. Œuvres choisies’, Brussels, RMFAB, 2001, p. 58-59)
