Gorge du Tarn (distance from start: 21.78 km/13.54 miles)

Gorge du Tarn
La Malène
Gorges du Tarn is a canyon (gorge) in the natural park of the Cevennes, created by the river Tarn. The gorge starts near Ispagnac and end at Le Rozier. Because there is a road which runs at the bottom of the canyon, you can experience this gorge in a great way.

You can also go down the river by canoe.

The rocks around you are limestone, marl and dolomite. At the bottom, the gorge is about 30-500 m, and at the top, about 1-2 km.

Hauterives (distance from start: 25.27 km/15.7 miles)

Hauterives
Sainte-Enimie
There are no big roads on the left bank of the river Tarn so the village is difficult to access from the limestone plateau at the south side of the river Tarn, calles "Causse de Méjean". To be able to provide the villagers of Hauterives with supplies, they installed a cable lift crossing the river Tarn.

Face of Jesus - rock
Laval-du-Tarn
This rock represents obviously a face. The locals recognized it as the face of Jesus. A peculiar play of nature (or our brain). You can see the rock a few hundred meters stream down of the castle of Château de la Caze.

In the chapel of Saint-Chély-du-Tarn you will see a peculiar religious habit which is not so common to see anymore. The habit also exists in Italy. People leave small notes with their wishes at the statue of the Notre Dame in the chapel.

Sainte-Enimie is among the most beautiful villages of France, because of some characteristic streets. The result is that it is very popular with tourists. If you like it less busy, check out the next village down stream (my personal favourite of the valley).

Castelbouc (distance from start: 42.17 km/26.2 miles)

Castelbouc
Sainte-Enimie
The village Castelbouc has a lot of cave dwellings. It is located on the left bank of the Tarn. The houses are attached at the top of the rocky outcrop. You also can see there the ruins of the medieval castle of Castelbouc, destroyed in 1592 by order of the states of Gevaudan, so that it can not serve as a refuge for the Protestants during the religious wars. A legend is connected to the castle. During the time of the Crusades, all men were gone, except the lord of Castelbouc. Legend has it that he should satisfy all the village women, in need of man, and he died of exhaustion. At night, his ghost-shaped goat (names bout in French) flies over the castle. This gave the name to the place.
