Gorges du Tarn is a canyon (gorge) in the natural park of the Cevennes, created by the river Tarn. The gorge starts near Ispagnac and end at Le Rozier. Because there is a road which runs at the bottom of the canyon, you can experience this gorge in a great way.

You can also go down the river by canoe.

The rocks around you are limestone, marl and dolomite. At the bottom, the gorge is about 30-500 m, and at the top, about 1-2 km.

There are no big roads on the left bank of the river Tarn so the village is difficult to access from the limestone plateau at the south side of the river Tarn, calles "Causse de Méjean". To be able to provide the villagers of Hauterives with supplies, they installed a cable lift crossing the river Tarn.

Chateau de Prades is situated near the town of Sainte-Enimie overlooking the gorges of the Tarn. Dating from the twelfth century, it is classified a historical monument since 1974.

Castelbouc

The village Castelbouc has a lot of cave dwellings. It is located on the left bank of the Tarn. The houses are attached at the top of the rocky outcrop. You also can see there the ruins of the medieval castle of Castelbouc, destroyed in 1592 by order of the states of Gevaudan, so that it can not serve as a refuge for the Protestants during the religious wars. A legend is connected to the castle. During the time of the Crusades, all men were gone, except the lord of Castelbouc. Legend has it that he should satisfy all the village women, in need of man, and he died of exhaustion. At night, his ghost-shaped goat (names bout in French) flies over the castle. This gave the name to the place.
