Berlin's new film museum is spread out on three floors of the Sony Center, a futuristic complex designed by Helmut Jahn, the German-American celebrity architect. The exhibition takes you through 100 years of (mostly German) film history, though the focus is clearly on that golden pre-war era when Berlin film-making came close to challenging Hollywood.

Holocaust Memorial

The Holocaust Memorial, the Holocaust-Mahnmal or the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is created by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Buro Happold. It consists of 2,711 concrete slabs .

There was a bit of controversy related to the anti-graffiti paint: the Degussa company provided the anti-graffiti substance Protectosil used to cover the steles. The company had been involved in several different ways in the National-Socialist persecution of the Jews.

Berlin State Opera

King Frederick II of Prussia shortly after his accession to the throne commissioned the original building of the Berlin State Opera on the site. Construction work began in July 1741. After the collapse of the German Empire in 1918, the Opera was renamed Staatsoper unter den Linden and the Königliche Kapelle became Kapelle der Staatsoper. After the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, the Opera was somewhat isolated, but still maintained a comprehensive repertoire that featured the classic and romantic period together with contemporary ballet and operas.

Did you know that Adolf Hitler ordered the closure of the Kronprinzenpalais, a part of the National Gallery. Here was the modernly art department. Not really the thing of the Fuhrer. He called this the scary art department, even containng masterpieces by Kandinsky, Schiele, Nolde and Maevich. By order of the Ministry of Education it was closed in October 1936.

Egyptian Museum - Altes Museum

During the cold-war division of the city, and until early 2005, the island''s renowned collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts was housed in the genteel West Berlin neighbourhood of Charlottenburg, separated from its former home in East Berlin after being evacuated at the start of the second world war. Since unification, plans have been afoot to return it to the island, and on August 13th 2005 the collection went on display in the Museum Island''s Altes Museum

This small, privately run museum gives a feeling of ordinary life under communism. Once Germany was reunified in 1990, most East Germans couldn't replace their old furniture, unfashionable clothing and outdated household goods fast enough. Some, however, just couldn't bear to throw away their memories. Thanks to these nostalgic types, this museum, the only one in the country to depict everyday German life behind the Iron Curtain, was founded in 2006 on the back of the Ostalgie phenomenon.

The Lustgarten is a park on Museum Island near the site of the former Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace) of which it was originally a part. It is a place where a lot of people gathered during historical events. During the years of the Weimar Republic, the Lustgarten was frequently used for political demonstrations. The Socialists and Communists held frequent rallies there. In August 1921, 500,000 people demonstrated against right-wing extremist violence. After the murder of Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau in June 1922, 250,000 protested in the Lustgarten. In February, 1933, 200,000 people demonstrated against the new Nazi Party regime of Adolf Hitler: shortly afterwards public opposition to the regime was banned. Under the Nazis, the Lustgarten was converted into a site for mass rallies. In 1934, it was paved over and the equestrian statue removed. Hitler addressed mass rallies of up to a million people there.

One of Berlin's greatest puzzles is the Altar of Pergamon, an ancient Greek temple dating from 180-160BC dug up by German archaeologists in the 1880s. The altar is covered with a mammoth frieze depicting all the gods in battle against a horde of giants (with Athena pulling Alcyoneos by the hair and Zeus taking on three giants at once).

The museum's 30-minute, English-language recorded tour, which you can pick up at the entrance, is excellent.
