The city of Orléans provides the public with six public libraries called media libraries.
The library has its origins in the bequest made by Guillaume Prousteau, a professor at the University of Orléans. In 1714, he left his personal library, consisting of more than 4,000 printed works and 39 manuscripts, to the convent of Bonne-Nouvelle, with the monks having to make it a public library under the control of the city. Guillaume Prousteau had planned the opening hours and established precise regulations on the way the library operated.
