Der Lübecker Dom ist der erste große Backsteinkirchbau an der Ostsee und mit rund 130 Metern Länge eine der längsten Backsteinkirchen. 1247 wurde der Dom geweiht. Patrone der evangelischen Kirche sind die Heiligen Johannes der Täufer und Blasius , Maria und Nikolaus.
Im Jahre 1173 legte Heinrich der Löwe als Stifter den Grundstein des Domes als Kathedrale für das Bistum Lübeck, nachdem im Jahre 1160 der Bischofssitz von Oldenburg in Holstein unter Bischof Gerold hierher verlegt worden war. Der Lübecker Dom gehört somit zu den vier sogenannten Löwendomen. Die Kirche wurde als Bischofskirche Johannes dem Täufer und als Gemeindekirche dem Heiligen Nikolaus geweiht.
