The iconic Broel towers are the only remains of the oldest fortresses in Kortijk. The southern 'Speytorre' was built in 1385 to control shipping on the Lys and was also part of the fortified fence of the count's castle. The northern 'Inghelburghtorre' from 1415 served as a weapons depot and was equipped with cannons. Both towers are built of sand and limestone. The Broel bridge originally dates from 1385. It was destroyed several times and rebuilt each time. The towers and the bridge together form a unique and atmospheric site, close to the heart of the city.
