Ben Macdui es la segunda montaña más alta del Reino Unido después de Ben Nevis, y la más alta del parque nacional Cairngorms. Después de la derrota de Domnall mac Uilliam en 1187, Donnchad II, conde de Fife, adquirió Strathavon, un territorio que se extiende desde Ballindalloch hasta Ben Macdui; porque la montaña marcaba el límite occidental del territorio de Donnchad, el historiador y erudito del lugar, el profesor G.W.S. Barrow sugirió que la montaña tomó su nombre de la familia de Donnchad, Mac Duibh.[1]
