La Basílica Patriarcal de San Francisco está situada en Asís, en la región italiana de Umbría, y es Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde el año 2000.[1][2] Lugar de la glorificación de San Francisco de Asís, se distinguen en ella dos partes fundamentales: la Basílica inferior, baja y oscura, y la Basílica superior, espaciosa y luminosa. Esta distribución se ha interpretado de manera simbólica: la primera representaría la vida de penitencia, mientras que la segunda simbolizaría la gloria.[3]
