La région des lacs et des cascades se situent au coeur du Jura, entre Lons-le-Saunier et Saint-Claude. Avec ses 500 m de long, ses 200 m de large et ses 10 m de profondeur, le lac de Vernoy est sans doute le plus petit. Le plus grand est sans aucun doute le lac de Chalain: 200 ha, 2,9 km de long et 1 km de large.
