Venne fondata intorno al 714 da san Ruperto ed è il monastero di suore più antico fra le nazioni di lingua tedesca. La prima badessa fu santa Erentrude, che era nipote di san Ruperto.
La dotazione dell'abbazia fu data da Teodeberto di Baviera, e aumentata dall'imperatore Enrico II, che fu anche duca di Bavaria.
