Si estende su una superficie di 156,18 km², e al 1º gennaio 2019 contava 262 219 abitanti, il che ne faceva la seconda città più popolata del Belgio. Gand fu la capitale dell'antica contea delle Fiandre, spesso rivale di Bruges, e città natale di Carlo V. Importante nodo ferroviario, dispone anche di un porto fluviale che, attraverso una serie di canali, si collega al Mare del Nord. Il motto della città è in latino Fides et amor, fedeltà e amore. Il dialetto locale «Gents» è uno dei più tipici in Belgio.
