L'abbazia fu fondata tra il 659 ed il 661 sotto il patronato dei re Merovingi da Batilde, vedova del re Clodoveo II, e da Clotario III. Fu dedicata a San Pietro apostolo.L'arte della miniatura venne praticata nell'abbazia di Corbie sin dall'VIII secolo; i manoscritti usciti dallo scriptorium dell'abbazia in quel periodo sono tra gli esempi più caratteristici della miniatura merovingia, per la decorazione composta da iniziali zoomorfiche dai vivaci colori. All'inizio del IX secolo spicca un artista molto originale, improntatodall'influenza proveniente dall'Anglia, che è autore di un salterio, ora conservato nella Biblioteca municipale di Amiens, dove l'illustrazione viene impiegata come parte integrate del manoscritto, ad esempio anche come elemento costitutivo delle maiuscole.
