Il piccolo centro sorge a destra del corso del Rio Arno, alle falde settentrionali del massiccio del Gran Sasso d'Italia, al riparo dei roccioni calcarei che delimitano in basso la località di Prati di Tivo, verde declivio morenico che si eleva verso il Corno Piccolo e il Corno Grande della cima più alta dell'Appennino centrale. Il suo territorio comunale rientra nell'ambito di competenza della Comunità montana del Gran Sasso ed è l'unico della provincia teramana interamente compreso nell'area del Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga zona “O”. Fa parte del territorio del comune anche la frazione di Prati di Tivo posta a 1450 m di altitudine e sede dell'omonima stazione sciistica.
