Il centro storico della città sorge in posizione strategica su un colle a metà strada tra Firenze e Pisa, per cui fu, in epoca medievale, scena di molteplici scontri fra le due città, fino alla definitiva conquista fiorentina. Sede di diocesi, San Miniato è un importante centro economico e industriale della zona del cuoio di Ponte a Egola ed è famoso per i suoi tartufi bianchi e prodotti vinicoli e oleari.
