Het Hageland kent vele heuvelruggen. Daar is een geologische verklaring voor want je zit hier met sterk ingesneden getuigenheuvels van de Diestiaanzee, genoemd naar de stad Diest. Die Diestiaanzee overspoelde vooral het noorden van België in de periode van het Tertiar (70 tot 3 miljoen jaar geleden). Het zand ging door haar samenstelling sterk aaneenkitten tot harde zandbanken. Bij het regelmatig blootvallen van deze zandbanken is het glauconiet verweerd en het zand aan elkaar geroest, waardoor dus een sterke laag ijzerzandsteen is ontstaan.
