Het Warandepark is nu een publieke groene ruimte. Maar tot in de 18de eeuw ligt hier de tuin van het Paleis van Coudenberg. In dat paleis zetelen eerst de Brabantse hertogen en daarna de Habsburgers, tot het in 1731 helemaal afbrandt.
Na de brand komt er een heel nieuwe hofwijk, waarvan het huidige Koninklijk Paleis uiteindelijk ook deel uitmaakt. De nabijheid van het paleis en de hooggelegen locatie zorgen ervoor dat ook andere overheidsinstellingen zich hier vestigen, zoals het Federaal Parlement, het Grondwettelijk Hof en de Senaat.
Vanaf het Warandepark dender je over de kasseien naar beneden langs een van de moeilijkst befietsbare wegen in de stad: de Oratoriënberg.
