De Koninklijke Gaanderijen werden op vraag van Koning Leopold II in 1900 ontworpen. Deze bijna 400 meter lange overdekte wandelgaanderij werd in 1905 gebouwd aan de rand van het strand om de koninklijke villa te verbinden met de Wellingtonrenbaan. Het moest de gasten beschermen tegen zon, regen en wind. De Venetiaanse Gaanderijen stonden jarenlang leeg en werden nauwelijks gebruikt, tot er in 1994 door de Cultuurdienst Oostende de tentoonstelling 'De bevrijding van Oostende' werd georganiseerd. Sindsdien vinden er in de Venetiaanse Gaanderijen jaarlijks prestigieuze tentoonstellingen plaats.
