In het begin van de jaren 1930, besloot de minister van Defensie, Albert Devèze, om een lijn van kleine betonnen versterkingen te bouwen : de Devèze lijn. Tussen 1933 en 1935 werden er drie honderd en negen kleine schuilplaatsen, genaamd "Fortin", gebouwen in de Ardennen. Twee honderd vier en zeventig van deze schuilplaatsen bevinden zich in de provincie Luxemburg.
Dit defensiessystem had speciale soldaten nodig in een speciale eenheid die mobiliteit, snelheid en effectiviteit combineert ====> Het Regiment van de Ardens Jagers werd geboren. In 1936 verslechterde de internationale situatie. Belgïe besluit tot een strikt neutrale politiek en isoleert zich van zijn traditionele bondgenoten. De minister van Defensie Albert Devèze neemt ontslag in juni van het zelfde jaar.
