Dit land kreeg de naam van een moordende griep toegekend, die startte in WO I: De Spaanse Griep. De oorsprong van die griep lag in de VS en woedde als sterk in Engeland en Frankrijk. Maar omdat die landen in oorlog waren, werden alle negatieve berichten gesensureerd. Spanje was echter neutraal in WO I. En daarom was de persvrijheid er groter. Het leek dan ook dat de griep daar vooral woedde. En zo kreeg de groep zijn internationale, incorrecte naam.
