Galilei is beroemd voor zijn valproef op de toren van Pisa om aan te tonen dat objecten die zwaarder of lichter zijn daarom niet sneller of minder snel vallen. Dat dacht men toen, gebaseerd op de theorieën van Aristoteles. Wat weinigen weten is dat deze proef eerder werd gedaan door de Brugse geleerde Simon Stevin op de toren van Delft en hij dit aantoonde voor Galilei. Galilei zou er echter beroemd om worden.
Het feit dat Galilei hier de proef zou gedaan hebben is zelf twijfelachtig: de enigste bron die dit meldt is van zijn secretaresse.
