Samnaun ist eine politische Gemeinde in der Region Engiadina Bassa/Val Müstair, am östlichen Nordrand des Schweizer Kantons Graubünden. Die Gemeinde besteht aus den fünf Fraktionen Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch und Samnaun. Samnaun ist schweizerisches Zollausschlussgebiet.
Die Geschichte Samnauns ist eng mit derjenigen des Unterengadins verbunden. Die ersten Siedler, die zwischen 800 und 1000 n. Chr. auf der Suche nach neuen Weidegründen ins Samnauntal kamen, stammten aus dem Unterengadin. In den Familien wurde bis gegen 1800 beinahe ausschliesslich romanisch gesprochen. Heute sprechen die Samnauner einen Tiroler Dialekt, der eigentlich aus dem Südbairischen kommt und – mit dieser ganz speziellen Färbung – nur in diesem Tal anzutreffen ist.
