Solothurn ist ein Kanton in der Deutschschweiz und zählt zur Grossregion Espace Mittelland. Der Hauptort ist die gleichnamige Stadt Solothurn, der bevölkerungsreichste Ort ist Olten.
Solothurn liegt im Mittelland und Jura zwischen den Kantonen Bern, Basel-Landschaft, Aargau und Jura und dem Elsass. Es gibt keinen Kanton, der so verzweigt ist wie der Kanton Solothurn. Die Verzweigungen reichen bis Dornach nahe Basel, weit ins Berner Gebiet hinein, gehen östlich bis fast nach Aarau. Die Exklaven Kleinlützel und Hofstetten/Mariastein grenzen an Frankreich , die Exklave Steinhof wird vom Kanton Bern umschlossen. Kienberg im Nordosten ist hingegen keine Exklave.
Der höchste Punkt im Kanton ist mit 1445 m die Hasenmatt, eine Stelle auf dem Jurakamm bei Selzach. Die Dünnern ist das einzige grössere Gewässer mit Quellgebiet im Solothurner Jura. Durchströmt wird der Kanton von Aare, Emme und Birs.
