Merseburg ist eine Dom- und Hochschulstadt an der Saale im südlichen Sachsen-Anhalt. Sie ist Verwaltungssitz des Saalekreises und Bestandteil des länderübergreifenden Ballungsraums der Großstädte Leipzig und Halle. In der maßgeblich von diesen beiden Oberzentren geprägten Metropolregion Mitteldeutschland fungiert Merseburg als Mittelzentrum. Unmittelbar an Merseburg grenzen die Chemiestandorte Schkopau und Leuna.
Merseburg, eine der ältesten Städte im mitteldeutschen Raum, wurde im 10. Jahrhundert zur Königspfalz erhoben und gilt als Heimatstadt der Merseburger Zaubersprüche aus dem 9./10. Jahrhundert. Die Ersterwähnung im 9. Jahrhundert als „Mersiburc civitas“ weist auf eine bereits vorhandene befestigte Ansiedlung hin. Tatsächlich lassen sich seit der Jungsteinzeit anhaltende Besiedelungen nachweisen.
