Der Landkreis Gotha ist ein Landkreis in der westlichen Mitte Thüringens. Nachbarkreise sind im Norden der Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis, im Nordosten der Landkreis Sömmerda, im Osten die kreisfreie Stadt Erfurt, im Südosten der Ilm-Kreis, im Südwesten der Landkreis Schmalkalden-Meiningen und im Westen der Wartburgkreis.
Der Landkreis Gotha liegt im westlichen Mittelthüringen. Im Norden und Osten grenzt er an die Ausläufer des Thüringer Beckens. Das Geländeprofil variiert vom rund 200 Meter ü. NN gelegenen Tiefland im nördlichen Teil des Kreises bis zu über 900 Meter hohen Gipfeln des Thüringer Waldes im Süden.
