Bormio ist der Hauptort des oberen Veltlins. Er befindet sich auf 1225 m s.l.m. am Oberlauf des Adda und bedeckt eine Fläche von 41 km². Der Ort liegt in einem Talkessel, in dem von Nordwesten das Valdidentro, von Norden das Valle del Braulio, von Osten das Valfurva und von Süden das Valdisotto zusammenlaufen. Die Nachbargemeinden sind Valfurva, Valdisotto, Valdidentro, Stilfs und Val Müstair .
