Die Metropolitan Opera ist eine Theater-Gesellschaft am Lincoln Center in New York City. Sie wird umgangssprachlich als „Met“ bezeichnet und zählt zu den weltweit führenden Opernhäusern. Seit Beginn der Saison 2006/07 ist Peter Gelb General Manager.
Die Metropolitan Opera Company wurde im Jahre 1880 gegründet und erhielt ein vom Architekten J. Cleaveland Cady erbautes Opernhaus, das zwischen der 39. und 40. Straße am Broadway lag. Am 27. August 1892 beschädigte ein Brand das Gebäude schwer. Nach umfangreichen Renovierungsarbeiten konnte die Spielstätte wieder öffnen und noch bis 1966 genutzt werden. Danach entschloss sich die Metropolitan Opera Company, ihren Sitz und damit ihr Opernhaus an ihren heutigen Standort zu verlegen. Das erste Opernhaus wurde 1967 abgerissen.
