The Groote Meer is a nature reserve east of Ossendrecht. The 854-hectare estate is partly privately owned and partly managed by Natuurmonumenten.De Groote Meer is a former drifting sand area that was planted with a production forest of Scots pine from 1830 onwards. Here and there the drifting sand is still active and the relief shows height differences of 12 to 26 meters above sea level. It also includes two fens, called Groote Meer and Kleine Meer. From 1930 and even sooner from 1970 onwards, these waters dried up and enriched their food. Nevertheless, the plants typical of this biotope, but increasingly rare, such as shoreweed, belts, floating rush and white water ranunculus, are still present. The waterfowl grebes, black-necked grebe, pochard, teal and shoveler breed here. Hawk, tree falcon, sparrowhawk, tawny owl, nightjar, nuthatch and woodlark breed in the forests.
