È il comune più esteso della regione e si trova al centro del triangolo industriale Torino-Milano-Genova, costituendo un importante nodo di interscambio. È anche sede dell'Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale "Amedeo Avogadro", struttura tripolare condivisa con Vercelli e Novara.
Sorge a circa 100 metri s.l.m. nella pianura alluvionale formata dai fiumi Tanaro e Bormida, in prossimità del loro punto di confluenza. Grazie alla sua posizione al centro del triangolo Torino-Genova-Milano, la città costituisce un importante nodo autostradale e ferroviario con scalo di smistamento di testa, situato nel sud-ovest della stazione viaggiatori. È servita dall'autostrada A21 e dall'autostrada A26. È una città caratterizzata da lunghi e ampi viali a più corsie e da grandi ed ariose piazze.
