Juist is één van de acht Duitse eilanden in de Waddenzee, de omringende eilanden heten Borkum, Memmert (onbewoond) en Norderney. Het eiland is 17 kilometer lang en maximaal 700 meter breed. Het is als hoog punt boven de zeespiegel blijven uitsteken na de ijstijden. Het landschap is vergelijkbaar met dat van ‘onze’ waddeneilanden: een wadvlakte met kwelders die wordt afgeschermd van de Noordzee door duinen.
