Bayreuth Hauptbahnhof ist Ausgangs- oder Endpunkt von vier eingleisigen, nicht elektrifizierten Bahnstrecken, drei davon sind Hauptbahnen. Der Bahnhof gehört zur Bahnhofskategorie 3 und zum Verbundgebiet des Verkehrsverbunds Großraum Nürnberg. Er ist der größte Bahnhof in Bayreuth sowie die bedeutendste der vier – von ehemals zehn – im heutigen Stadtgebiet bestehenden Bahnstationen.
Am 28. November 1853 erhielt die Stadt mit der Eröffnung der Bahnstrecke von Neuenmarkt Anschluss an das bayerische Eisenbahnnetz. Dieses bestand damals lediglich aus der Bahnstrecke von Kempten über Nürnberg und Bamberg nach Hof, der sogenannten Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn, mit einem südlichen Abzweig nach München und einem nördlichen nach Schweinfurt.
