Sie ist Hauptort des Kantons Cambrai.Die an der oberen Schelde gelegene Stadt ist ein Zentrum der Textilindustrie, das Umland der Stadt wird landwirtschaftlich genutzt. Cambrai war für die Herstellung des Stoffes Kambrik, eines feinen Baumwollgewebes, das dort erstmals produziert wurde, bekannt.
