Edifié par les nazis dans l'optique d'une éventuelle invasion de la Grande Bretagne, il était censé en coordonner l'organisation.
Il ne servit jamais à ce funeste projet, mais demeura par son gigantisme - une quarantaine d'ouvrages bétonnés - une pièce maîtresse parmi les sites fortifiés de la France occupée à cette époque.
De nos jours, il peut se visiter en saison lors de visites guidées et accueille également de nombreuses manifestations ouvertes au public...
