La rivière est constituée à l'origine de deux cours d'eau, la Taf Fechan et la Taf Fawr qui se joignent au nord de Merthyr Tydfil.
La rivière contient de nombreux poissons migrateurs, comme les saumons, les truites et les anguilles.
