C'est un exemple d'architecture anglaise au cours d'une période qui passe du gothique médiéval au classique de la Renaissance, et l'une des rares maisons prodiges à survivre presque inchangée depuis l'ère élisabéthaine. La maison est classée par English Heritage comme un monument classé Grade I, et Monument Historique Classé . Conçu par un architecte inconnu, peut-être le maçon William Arnold, le manoir de trois étages est construit en pierre locale de Ham Hill vers 1598 par Edward Phelips, Master of the Rolls et procureur lors du procès de la Conspiration des Poudres .
